Salah Hassan was born in Babylon (Iraq) in 1960 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts there. He worked as a journalist, poet, playwright & critic. He received a number of literary articles for his poems. In the late 1980s he came into conflict with the regime. He was arrested several times and tortured heavily in 1987. After a long wandering, he has lived in the Netherlands since 1995, where he twice earned the Dunya Poetry Prize.
